World Day of The Poor 2020

This Sunday 15th November marks the fourth World Day of the Poor, highlighting an issue so incredibly apparent in our society today. We have seen how the COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread jobs losses and financial insecurity, with the lives of so many families turned upside down, whilst as so often happens, those with the least face the most overwhelming challenges.

It is during uncertain periods like these that we reflect, and become re-inspired by, the life work of St Vincent de Paul - a man known for his sacrificial service to the poor. The Vincentian spirit has always been at the heart of what we do, and so countless times this year we have found ourselves asking “What would St Vincent do?”

How heartening it has been to see so many organisations and individuals, including our family of Vincentian charities, entirely remodel their service offerings to ensure those suffering were, and remain to be, supported during their time of need. This year's theme for World Day of the Poor, Stretch forth your hand to the poor, is perfectly representative of these acts of kindness. And so, despite the devastating economic consequences of the pandemic, we can all be encouraged by this Vincentian spirit.

While typically World Day of the Poor is a Roman Catholic observance, St Vincent’s spirit and dedication to the poor can be embraced by people from all religions and none. Therefore we invite you to commemorate this day with us, because now more than ever, but especially in honour of this day, we can play our part in shaping the future of poverty.
